After breaking his leg playing high school football, Montre’ turned to music as a source of therapy to help him heal and triumph over the obstacle. Montre’ then worked his way back to the football field to earn a scholarship to Reinhardt University. On this journey, music became Merritt’s passion and then he decided to develop the Merritt Music Foundation in high hopes to help people with similar situations. Merritt believes everyone has a soundtrack to their life. He often says, “When life hits you, you can always turn to music.” Merritt has also been a role model in various lives and he has aspired to taken on the challenge to help those in need for free. Merritt refers to his mother’s quote a lot which is, “Sometimes people just need to know you care.” Every day Merritt makes it personal to ensure that is known through school, music, and work. Family is a huge part of Merritt and everyone sees it day in and day out.

The benefits of music education are astounding, and studies have consistently exposed the tremendously positive effect music education has on a child’s academic performance, sense of community, self-expression and self-esteem. But as schools across the nation increasingly face budget cuts and pressures, music is often one of the first subject areas to be cut.

Many individuals don't understand it, yet music mostly affects their lives than they may suspect, and they would mind if it somehow managed to vanish. Without music, life could never be the same. To keep music alive, people must be instructed about it in schools. People will not just get the chance to understand and appreciate what music brings to the table; however will receive the endless rewards that accompany music. Old Greek philosopher and educator Plato once said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to imagination, and life to everything.”

At The Merritt Music Foundation, we develop strategic partnerships with school districts and use innovative ways to help people overcome life’s obstacles through the application of music therapy, music education, music events, and providing funds and scholarships for music programming.

Our goal? To motivate, inspire, and encourage people to make it in life through music.
